Gmundner Lodge set within the Namibian landscape

Gmundner × Namibia: Art, Community & Connection

Journal · Gmundner × Namibia · 4 min read

Art, community
& connection.

The artists, ceramic collaborations and partnerships behind a wider Namibian story.

Gmundner Lodge set within the Namibian landscape

A ceramic collection can introduce a place. It can also open a conversation about who made the artwork, how ideas travelled and which relationships sit behind the finished object.

For Gmundner × Namibia, that conversation reaches beyond the Lodge and the table. It includes artistic exchange with San artists, the work of people sharing ceramic knowledge, and the projects described by the EMF Namibia Foundation.

Taking time with those connections gives the collection more context. It lets us see the designs as part of a relationship between individual creators, workshops and communities.

Art begins with the artist

Gmundner Lodge describes a collaboration with San artists from Donkerbos and Drimiopsis in Namibia. In the workshops, participants created drawings and ceramic works featuring their own interpretations of plants, birds and animals. The Lodge says artworks were purchased directly from the artists as part of the collaboration.

The important starting point is authorship. A motif is not simply a decorative resource to be borrowed from a landscape. It comes from someone’s choices: what to depict, how to draw it, which details to emphasize and how to give it a personal form.

When looking at a design, give those decisions the same attention you would give the ceramic technique. Follow the shape of a mark. Notice the relationship between colour and open space. Consider how an image changes when it moves from a flat drawing to the curve of an object.

From a drawing to a ceramic piece

The Gmundner Moments 2026 magazine describes the ELSE SAN Edition as a collaboration in which Else Dam’s designs begin on paper and are developed for ceramics with the Gmunden manufactory. Hearts and subtle, sandy colour variations are central to that edition’s visual language.

That movement between paper and ceramic is a meeting of practices. The artwork supplies its own character; the ceramic form introduces another set of questions. Where should a motif sit? How does it read when the piece is turned? What happens at a rim, a handle or the centre of a plate?

The result is best approached with curiosity rather than a single label for an entire culture. San communities and individual artists have their own voices. An edition represents a particular collaboration, not every possible expression of San identity.

Explore the SAN collection with that distinction in mind, and read the details supplied for the individual pieces.

The EMF Namibia Foundation

Founded in 2025 by Elisabeth and Markus Friesacher, the EMF Namibia Foundation describes its purpose through five areas: education, language, health, agriculture and art. Its stated approach emphasizes respectful dialogue and cooperation with local people.

The foundation identifies San settlements around Donkerbos, in the Kalahari near the Namibia–Botswana border, as a focus of its work. The 2026 Gmundner Moments magazine also introduces these priorities and the connection with the ceramic collaboration.

These areas describe different parts of everyday life. Education and language concern access to learning and communication. Health concerns access to care. Agriculture and art concern distinct forms of knowledge, activity and opportunity. Giving each its own name is more informative than treating all of them as one broad promise.

For current projects, updates and ways to contribute, the foundation’s own website is the best place to continue reading.

Different partners, different contributions

On its website, the foundation describes Gmundner Lodge as a logistical base for project support, including spaces and accommodation for workshop leaders. It describes Gmundner Keramik’s contribution in terms of ceramic knowledge, materials and a distribution network for the works.

Those are complementary roles. A workshop needs more than an idea: it needs a place, materials, time, practical support and people who can work together. Describing those contributions makes a partnership easier to understand.

It also keeps the people at the centre of the story. The creative work belongs to its makers. The partners provide particular resources around it. Neither a product photograph nor a short account of a workshop can stand in for the full experience of the communities involved.

Read further, directly

Gmundner Lodge’s social responsibility page describes its San art collaboration and related support. The EMF Namibia Foundation explains its purpose, partners and opportunities to contribute.

If you would like to support the foundation directly, use the information on its own site. It can provide the current details about its projects and donation options.

Here in the Canadian store, our role in this story is to introduce the ceramics with context and point you towards those original sources. We invite you to explore the work, learn the names and relationships behind it, and continue reading beyond the collection page.

A well-chosen object can be a starting point for curiosity. In this case, it opens a path between a ceramic workshop in Austria, artistic expression in Namibia and the wider work of community partnerships.
